Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Beowulf was the working title for the Australian animated feature Grendel Grendel Grendel. The film was based on John Gardner's novel Grendel, which in turn was based on...Beowulf. The story is told from the point of view of Grendel, the monster whom the "heroic" Beowulf battles. Far from a mindless beast, Grendel is a sensitive soul, understandably upset at how the world has been despoiled since the advent of Humanity. Director Alexander Stitt effectively utilizes limited animation and a fascinating array of pastel colors in his backgrounds. The voices are provided by such reliables as Peter Ustinov, Keith Michell and Arthur Dignam, while the musical score is provided by harmonica wizard Toots Thielmans. Though most entertaining, Grendel Grendel Grendel may not be suitable for very young children.
