Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

Life in a rural village of Uzbekistan is satirically dramatized in this comedy by Uzbek director Melo Absalov. The title character is Granny (Zainob Sadrieva), who belies anyone's concept of an elderly woman sitting in a rocking chair and crocheting doilies. Granny drops into her village by helicopter and more or less takes over from there. Her son has fathered nearly an entire soccer team; he needs one more player that his wife has to provide (with his complicity, of course). Granny is furious at his treatment of the poor spouse and throws her son out of his home; he rages in protest that he should have married a Japanese woman, since they obey their husbands. But Granny's intervention does not stop there, as she still has some obligations to perform for her grandchildren.
