Gorillaz: Dare
Share on
Synopsis by Nathan Southern
This release contains four music videos from the cult band Gorillaz, the first American rap group to combine hip hop music with stylized illustrations and create animated alter-egos for themselves onscreen. The style feels visually modeled, to some degree, on Japanese anime. But this only represents one among dozens of artistic reference points. What emerges is a surrealistic, heady mix of animation and live action that -- given its myriad of influences -- appears completely unique and unparalleled on the contemporary urban music scene. The tracks here includes two versions of "Dare," "Samba at 13," and "People."
