"Fox Introduces Unusually Promising Star in John Gilbert," proclaimed trade paper Moving Picture World in its review of this drama. Four years later, while at MGM, Gilbert would become one of the silent era's most prominent luminaries. Caleb Thomas (James Farley) and his son, Gordon (John Gough), try to swindle Silas Huntworth (Edwin Booth Tilton) out of his property. A stranger to this area of the Canadian northwoods, Gleam O'Dawn (Gilbert), comes to the aid of Huntworth and his pretty, adopted daughter, Nini (Barbara Bedford). O'Dawn, an artist, falls in love with Nini, and he is struck by Huntworth's paintings, which are hauntingly like his own. Finally, Pierre (Wilson Hummel), a violinist and the village madman, reveals the truth about Huntworth -- he is O'Dawn's father who had cruelly abandoned his mother. O'Dawn is torn between his love for Nini, and his desire to avenge his dead mother. With Nini's help, O'Dawn becomes convinced of Huntworth's remorse, and ultimately forgives him.
