A plodding, too-quaint adaptation of Patrick Wilde's play What's Wrong With Angry, Get Real has aspirations to be a deeper, more probing look at burgeoning homosexuality during adolescence, but often takes the banal route to more safely accommodate viewers. Ben Silverstone has a cheeky affability and is an interesting find, but the rest of the cast fails to find much in their characters that isn't already dictated by the source material. Though a British production, there's very little that wouldn't feel right at home on an American sitcom, and the film's neat yet unsatisfying resolution unfortunately suggests the final scenes of In & Out, which at least had the benefit of being a comedy. The weakest plot strand of the hugely acclaimed British series Queer as Folk has more invention than the entire running time of this well-intentioned but unimaginative coming-out tale.
