Famed Swedish short-subject director Gosta Werner expands his usual screen time with the feature-length Gatan. The film's English-language title is The Street, and indeed it is on a busy Stockholm street that most of the drama transpires. Maj-Britt Nillsson (later known simply as May Britt) stars as an innocent country girl who is seduced and abandoned by a big-city gangster (Peter Lindgren). With nowhere else to turn, the girl is forced into a life of prostitution. The dramatized scenes are given credence with "actuality" clips of real-life streetwalkers being rounded up by the police.
