Stan Laurel stars in this so-so Hal Roach comedy, which relies an awful lot on cars falling apart -- a common gag throughout the 1920s. Laurel is service station attendant Phillup McCann (get it?). Instead of working he spends his time flirting with the girl who works at the lunch stand (Katherine Grant), who also happens to be the daughter of the garage owner (Charles Stevenson) -- this seemed to be a running theme for Laurel's characters throughout this period of his career. Cars collapse, explode, and go out of control, all in spite of (or perhaps because of) Phillup's efforts. In what is probably the most amusing scene in the film, he gets one moody car to work by putting on a disguise and fooling it. His biggest dilemma is when he has to tow a car, and winds up having to do it without the tow truck's help. Although prints of Gas and Air exist, it's likely that parts of the film are missing from them.
