Rod Steiger invites viewers to join him as he provides a tour of Beijing in Forbidden City: The Great Within. This intriguing name refers to the imperial palace complex located in the heart of the city. It was from this location that the Chinese imperial family ruled over the the lives of their 400 million citizens. The palace is quite impressive, with almost 10,000,000 rooms. This program uses the writings of past rulers and some of their concubines who lived there, to paint a picture of the grand lifestyle these emperors enjoyed. Showcases the interiors of the palace and other areas that have only been seen by Westerners in recent years. This Discovery Channel video is filled with historical data about how this palace came into being and how it has been used ever since.
