Robert Altman pulls out his whole bag of tricks in his imaginative film version of the Sam Shepard play, but it can't quite cover the shortcomings of the material. The playwright stars as a drifting cowpoke who pulls into a diner in the middle of nowhere and slowly becomes embroiled with a waitress (Kim Basinger). Shepard's play, which seems to be telling a Faulkner story with incestuous overtones in the mysteriously elliptical manner of Harold Pinter, is intriguing for the first act but becomes increasingly frustrating and apparently pointless as it unfolds. Altman shoots from a number of odd and interesting setups in an effort to inject energy into what is basically a one-set project, and the film looks beautiful, but all to little avail. Basinger gives one of her better performances as the resentful half-sister, but the uncomfortable-looking Shepard has rarely been worse. Considering that he's speaking his own words, his performance may have suffered from the numerous disagreements between he and Altman.
