Marie Mersereau (Mae Marsh) travels from France to the U.S. with her sister Helen (Marguerite Marsh, Mae's real-life sister), brother Paul (George Cooper), and Helen's German fiancé, Hans Grossman (John Wessel). Also on board their ship is a young American artist, Robert Vorhis (Vernon Steele), who begins a drawing of Marie, which he doesn't get a chance to complete. Marie and her family settle in New York, but Helen becomes ill. Robert meets Marie once again in a flower shop where she has found work, and takes her home to meet his parents (Neil Moran and Maud Cooling). A cousin of Robert's, who has tried and failed to force himself on Marie, claims she's less than pristine, so Mrs. Vorhis takes her son to California in the hopes that he will forget her. Marie, meanwhile, has been left alone with her sister, whose illness has worsened. War has broken out and both Paul and Hans have returned home only to be killed in battle. Finally It is suggested that Marie take Helen to a charity home for consumptives and while she is out looking for the address, she is arrested for solicitation. She is brought before the judge, who happens to be Robert's father. During the investigation, Helen is found at home, dead, and Vorhis believes her story. Marie gets ready to go back to France, but just as she's about to board the ship, Robert shows up and they reunite.
