The Vietnam draft era provides the backdrop for this dramedy of a group of five young fraternity brothers who roadtrip across Texas to visit a friend's grave and enjoy a last fling before adulthood. Among the frat rats are a free spirit (Kevin Costner), an uptight ROTC nerd (Judd Nelson), and a mute, benevolent giant (Chuck Bush). Along the way, they pick up underage local girls for a night of fireworks and flirtation, try parachuting with a wacked-out stoner pilot, and attempt to tow their inoperable auto by lassoing a train; the entire time each ponders his own fate as some consider fleeing to Mexico to avoid military service, while others decide to fulfill their obligations. The story and pacing are uneven; there are too many lulls in the action to hold the audience's attention throughout the entire film, although the cast is good -- particularly Nelson, who plays a character other than an obnoxious loudmouth for a change.
