May McAvoy's performance in Sentimental Tommy made such an impression on the executives at Paramount that they signed her to a starring contract even before the film was released. When Helen Wainwright (McAvoy) returns from finishing school, her aunt (Kathlyn Williams) wants her to marry Lee Morton (Richard Tucker), the richest man in town, who believes that money can buy anything. Helen, however, is still fond of her childhood sweetheart, Donald Scott (future director Edward Sutherland). Morton dumps his mistress, Lillian Lord (Betty Schade), for Helen, and sends Scott off on a business trip. Scott returns on the day that Helen is supposed to marry Morton. She takes Scott to a little island to break the news to him and the boat drifts off. While the wedding guests are waiting, Helen and Scott are stuck on the island for the night. This causes a scandal and as a result, Morton breaks off the engagement and returns to Lillian. This is fine by Helen, because it means that she and Scott can be together.
