Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
This documentary serves as a platform for celebrating the life and ideas of Danish millionaire Hans Smith, who grew rich after inventing a plant food known as "Substral." Alternating between views of Smith enjoying his luxurious life, one is treated to lengthy explications, given directly to the camera, of his views about wealth and who gets it. The entire project was contracted by Smith with the filmmaker, and the millionaire had complete and final approval over the results. One highlight of the film is the inventor's detailed conception of just how he wants his body disposed of when he dies: a project which joins extraordinarily conspicuous consumption with the rites due to a Viking chieftain in the late Middle Ages.
