A hopeless drunk returns home following an incident that snaps him out of his stupor, and gets caught up in his nephew's scheme to sail off into the sunset in this dark drama starring John Malkovich and John Goodman. Mort Gleason (Malkovich hasn't been sober for 20 years. But one night, after witnessing his nephew Moo become the victim of a violent attack, Mort arrives at his sister's home in Chicago to reconnect with his sister Eileen's family. Meanwhile, Moo's younger brother Abe schemes with his best friend to purchase the Kathy II, a boat that could help them realize their dream of escaping their dreary lives. When Eileen leaves Mort in charge of the house while enjoying a rare night away from the family, Abe dupes his drunken uncle into buying the boat from unscrupulous liquor wholesaler Mr. Fletcher (John Goodman) - a transaction that sparks a series of unintended consequences.
