Alan Pakula directed this sleepy thriller involving murder and dream research. Kristy McNichol plays Kathy Gardner, a young woman living alone in a New York City apartment. When Danny (Joseph Culp), a nasty intruder begins to victimize her, Kathy stabs him to death. The question posed by the crime is whether Kathy killed Danny in self-defense or because of a subconscious reason? Could it be inner rage against her domineering father Ben (Paul Shenar)? Or could it be hidden anger against her unfaithful lover Michael (Ben Masters)? Only in the inner recesses of Kathy's dreams and her subconscious mind can the answers be found.
