A remake of a 1957 teen drama by the same name, the 1994 version is still set in the '50s, which gives the producers plenty of opportunities to show off some very cool old cars and nifty retro clothes and hairstyles. But the story and dialogue comes off as camp, and it's kind of fun to watch Mark Dacascos and Natasha Gregson Wagner -- daughter of Natalie Wood, the star of Rebel Without a Cause, the granddaddy of hotrod teen dramas -- try their dangedest to be too cool for school. The ending goes overboard to make an impact with a wonderfully, howlingly wrong-headed twist, which is supposed to be dreadfully serious but winds up being unspeakably funny. (Cruel funny, not funny ha-ha). Colorful sets, a zippy editing style, and an overwrought sensibility make this a not-entirely unpleasant cinematic experience.
