synopsis
King Kong director Ernest Schoedsack helmed this campy pulp classic about a chrome-domed mad scientist (Albert Dekker) in Coke-bottle specs who shrinks a quintet of human captives to doll-size in his jungle laboratory, upon which the victims are forced to deal with everyday objects and creatures that have suddenly become threateningly large (a theme dealt with far more effectively in The Incredible Shrinking Man 17 years later). More of a cavalcade of creative (and Oscar-nominated) visual effects than an effective film in itself, this is nevertheless a stylishly-directed effort from the accomplished Schoedsack, making excellent use of the then-new three-strip Technicolor process.
