Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man realizes he has a bit too much in common with a dumb animal in this drama from writer and director Antonio Nuic. It's 1995, and as the war in Croatia begins to wind down, Boro (Nebojsa Glogovac) decides he needs to get away from life in the city, so he packs up his wife Jasna (Natasa Janjic) and their young son Luka (Roko Roglic) and sets out for a few weeks on vacation in Drinovci, a small town in Herzegovina where he grew up. Sullen and macho Boro isn't getting along well with his wife, and Luka feels distant from his dad; when the family arrives in Drinovci, we learn that Boro unfortunately takes after the older men in his family. Boro's father Pasko (Tonko Lonza) was so insensitive to his wife that it drove her to suicide, and while his uncle Ante (Ljubomir Kiki Kapor) isn't quite as bad, he still treats his spouse Ljuba (Asja Jovanovic) like a servant rather than someone he loves. Boro's brother Pero (Emir Hadzihafizbegovic), who lost the use of his legs in Sarajevo, tries to encourage his sibling to show greater compassion and openness to his wife and son, but Boro doesn't get the picture until a run-in with a donkey teaches him a lesson about the trouble with a will of iron. Kenjac (aka Donkey) was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
