Celebrated Oncologist Dr. Michael Durant enlists the aid of uncertified Nigerian physician Dr. Bello to save a seven-year-old boy suffering from terminal cancer, and embarks on a treacherous journey to Nigeria to find the only medicine that can cure Dr. Bello after he is jailed for malpractice. Dr. Durant is still grieving the loss of his own daughter to cancer when he meets seven-year-old Sam, whose prospects for living another year are slim to none. Sam is the son of the hospital's most prominent Cancer Research Donors, and in his many talks with the young boy, Dr. Durant finds great comfort in his company. Meanwhile, as Dr. Durant finds his marriage torn apart by the devastating loss of his daughter, Sam's health takes a sudden turn for the worse. Desperate, the tormented doctor takes the advice of a furtive Nigerian nurse, and calls on a local miracle worker named Dr. Bellow to save the boy's life. In the wake of a clandestine late-night visit from the reclusive Dr. Bello, Sam's cancer quickly goes into remission. But when the Hospital Medial Board learns of Sam's unsanctioned treatment, Dr. Bello is promptly arrested, and Dr. Durant is prohibited from practicing medicine. Upon learning that Dr. Bello has fallen critically ill behind bars, Dr. Durant learns that the only hope for saving his life is to procure the same precious medicine that he used to save Sam. In order to retrieve it, however, Dr. Durant must travel to Nigeria and locate the fabled "Garden of Life" nestled among the highest peaks in the country. Now even if Dr. Durant succeeds in his arduous mission, he will be forever changed by the miracles and tragedies that he's witnessed along the way.
