Nitin Bose directs this industrial-themed musical-melodrama. Set against India's rapid industrialization during the 1930s, the film centers on 16-year-old Prabhavati (played by Chandrabati Devi in the Bengali version and Kamlesh Kumari in the Hindi one) who inherents a mill, and, through plucky ingenuity, turns it into a real moneymaking endevour. One of her workers, Prakash (K.L. Saigal), invents a device that makes the factory even more efficient, for which he is initially canned for his innovation but then quickly rehired. Though Prabhavati soon falls for the inventive young lad, he has fallen for her younger sister Sheila (Lila Desai). Though Sheila acquiesces to her elder sibling, she starts to abuse the staff, which prompts talks of a strike. Prabhavati quickly remedies the problem by committing suicide, thus allowing her sister to have the handsome Prakash.
