Synopsis by Nathan Southern

The French classical composer François Poulenc (1899-1963) adapted his three-act 1953 opera Dialogues des Carmélites from the 1949 novel of the same name by Georges Bernanos (Diary of a Country Priest). This particular production was mounted at the Staatsoper Hamburg in 2008; in the principal roles, it stars Wolfgang Schöne (as Marquis de la Force), Alexia Voulgaridou (as Blanche de la Force), Nikolai Schukoff (as Le Chevalier de la Force) and others. The Philharmoniker Hamburg and the Chor der Staatsoper Hamburg lend musical accompaniment, with Simone Young conducting and Florian Csizmadia serving as chorus master; Nikolaus Lehnhoff directs for the stage; and Raimund Bauer designed the sets.
