Reportedly inspired by Alexander Dovzhenko's glorification of collective agriculture, Nitin Bose directs this melodrama. The film opens with Ashok (K.L. Saigal) venturing to a remote hamlet, organizing the village, and, under his socialist agenda, manages to grow a record crop. At the same time, Ashok's childhood friend Ajoy (Jagdish Sethi) is studying in England, hoping to mine the same region as Ashok's collective. Ajoy's sister Protibha (Kamlesh Kumari) -- who has fallen for Ashok -- is secretly paying for Ajoy's education. Ajoy, in the meantime, falls for Gauri (Umasashi), the unfortunate daughter of social pariah Kunja (K.C. Dey). When he returns to India, Ajoy learns that some of the best coal deposits in India lie beneath the land Ashok is cultivating. Who will win -- agriculture or industry?
