Second-string horror-adventure from Italian director Ruggero Deodato, who was responsible for the cannibal subgenre's most visually and psychologically distressing entry, Cannibal Holocaust. Though it features plenty of violence and gruesome special effects, Cut and Run is a pale imitation of its predecessor (which some may say is a good thing), trading its slowly mounting menace and unsettling vérité for cheap action sequences and stale drama. Its script also borrows heavily from previous cannibal efforts, most notably Umberto Lenzi's Mangiati Vivi (1980), which also featured a Jim Jones connection. Leads Lisa Blount, Leonard Mann, and Willie Aames can do little with their cardboard reporter characters, and Karen Black and Richard Bright are wasted in minor roles. The film's rogues' gallery fare better; Euro exploitation vets Richard Lynch, Gabriele Tinti, and John Steiner (who suffers a truly horrible demise) are suitably menacing, and Michael Berryman's unusual appearance is used to great effect as a vicious Indian with a taste for decapitation. Worthy of note for its Claudio Simonetti (of Goblin fame) score.
