40-year-old Montagu Love is made up as elderly Cardinal Mercier in this war drama. He has church is in a small Belgian village when World War I breaks out. The Cardinal's ward, Liane de Merode (Jeanne Eagles), is in love with Lieutenant Maurice Lambeaux, a Belgian officer (Anthony Merlo). The Germans invade the town and Liane finds herself the object of the German commander's lust. The Cardinal marries her to Lambeaux in secret, but she is lured to the Germans' headquarters, and her husband is captured by them. Lambeaux is convinced by the enemy that his wife has been unfaithful, but when he goes to the Cardinal, he is set straight. Then as the Cardinal distracts the Germans by playing dead, the young couple escapes.
