synopsis
Sustaining a leg wound, Saunders (Vic Morrow) is picked up by an American ambulance, full of injured soldiers under the care of veteran Army physician Captain August (Gary Merrill). En route to the field hospital, Saunders sees August abruptly abandon a wounded soldier in order to save himself. Convinced that the doctor is suffering from combat fatigue and needs to be replaced, Saunders is stopped short by August's loyal nurse Ann Hunter (Geraldine Brooks), who insists that August is still a man of great courage--an assertion that will soon be tested to the utmost.
