synopsis
Die Singende Stadt (The Singing Town) takes place in sunny Naples. In his film debut, Polish tenor Jan Kiepura plays a handsome Neapolitan tour guide who falls in love with Viennese tourist Brigitte Helm. Though she feigns a mutual interest in Kiepura, Helm is merely a coquette, toying with our poor hero's emotions. The realization of this sends Kiepura back into the arms of his hometown sweetheart, which is where he should have remained in the first place. Immensely successful throughout the world, Die Singende Stadt was also filmed in French- and English-language versions, respectively titled La Ville qui Chante and Farewell to Love.
