This wheel-spinning offering was written, photographed, edited and directed by John Sjogren, and it's clear from the second scene that he could have used a little help. Choke falls prey to just about every pitfall that can befall a low-budget indie thriller, particularly one in which the writer/director has no one nearby to say, "John, perhaps shooting 90 percent of the movie in extreme close-ups isn't the way to go." And someone should have told Michael Madsen that a dark trench coat contrasts with a yellow John Deere hat in a way that makes him look ridiculous. For a guy who's always dodging cops, that hat certainly is conspicuous. As for goateed Dennis Hopper, his performance just goes to show that even a script that has no protagonist, no momentum, very little action, and an inappropriate ending can't keep him from doing what he does best: be himself. This one isn't even memorable enough to be forgettable.
