Location filming in San Francisco helps this otherwise routine crime drama from the Universal B-unit directed with little distinction by former screenwriter Murray Roth. Chinatown Squad is one of those Depression-era films that profess to "tell the truth" about this racket or that, but is mainly an excuse to keep the studio's stock company players earning their keep in between bigger and presumably better productions. And as such, the little film lived up to expectations.
