Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
It is worth noting that this drama is not based on Chekhov's stage play, The Cherry Orchard. In this tragic drama, set in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, a village's sweet-natured Party Secretary, who loves nature for its own sake, clashes with the "Head of the Branch Economy in the Village's Agroindustrial Complex," which is to say, the director of the local collective farm. The director of the collective wants to increase potato yields at the expense of the region's much older cherry orchards, in part because the potato yield will reflect to his credit, whereas the orchard is not under his control. He uses his authority to obligate all the able adults of the village to work on the potato fields, so that the orchard is neglected. The Party Secretary counters by enlisting the services of local school children, which proves to be a tactical mistake.
