synopsis
Part of the PBS series American Playhouse, this is a true story set during the Civil War. Charlotte Forten (Melba Moore) was an educated, wealthy black woman who wanted to prove that blacks were equal to whites. She went to the Sea Islands, off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina, and taught freed slaves to read and write. Samm-Art Williams, an African-American playwright who played the bartender Maurice in Joel and Ethan Coen's Blood Simple, scripted.
