Synopsis by Nathan Southern
The Netherlands Opera mounted this 2008 production of Jean-Philippe Rameau's 1737 opera Castor and Pollux, on the legendary self-sacrificial love between the mortal Castor and his immortal brother Pollux, both iconic figures in classical mythology - a tale that ends with Pollux voluntarily taking Castor's place in the underworld when Castor dies defending his love Télaire from a kidnapping. Christophe Rousset handles musical direction and Pierre Audi handles stage direction, with orchestral support by Les Talens Lyriques and The Chorus of the Netherlands Opera.
