Warner Bros.' Captain Thunder belongs to a long line of comic operas with Spanish or Mexican flavors, only this time there is no opera in sight. Very little of the so-called comedy is actually funny. "I can ride a horse!" exclaims the local Mexican commandant (Charles Judels) proudly. "In fact, I am part of ze horse!" Then comes the inevitable answer from the crowd, "And I know just which part" -- and so on and so forth. Everyone speaks with one phony accent or another in this dull film, including a badly miscast Fay Wray and Hungarian import Victor Varconi in the title role. The latter's chances of Hollywood stardom, needless to say, were severely handicapped by poor material such as Captain Thunder. Wray, in contrast, survived unscathed.
