Synopsis by Mark Deming
The lives of South Korean subway engineers becomes a metaphor for the commonplace tragedies of contemporary life in this independent drama from writer and director Suh Myung-soo. A seemingly ordinary day in Seoul's mass transit system takes an unexpected turn when a passenger kills himself, throwing the day's schedule into chaos. As the rail workers deal with the aftermath of the suicide, their conversations suggest this is not the first time that death has impacted their work day, and the emotional scars have yet to fully heal. Over the course of the afternoon, the subway drivers must come to terms with the tragedy as well as their own personal tribulations. Butterflymole (aka Nabi-dudeoji) was the first fictional feature from director Suh Myung-soo), who previously distinguished himself in documentaries.
