Bullet Scars was, as its publicity never failed to mention, based on an incident in the criminal career of John Dillinger. That may well have been true, but the film owes whatever punch it has to W.R. Burnett's short story Dr. Socrates, which had already been filmed twice (in 1935, and, as King of the Underworld, in 1939). If perhaps not in league with the former, Bullet Scars is certainly preferable to the latter despite a lack of star power. Howard da Silva is actually more menacing than Underworld's Humphrey Bogart and Regis Toomey is quite good as the doctor. Leading lady Adele Longmire came from Broadway where she had played Ann Rutledge in Abe Lincoln in Illinois.
