A typical low-budget early talkie Western, Breed of the West was released in something called Cinephone courtesy of Homer Ellmaker, who reportedly borrowed the equipment from one of the major studios. Both leading man Wally Wales (later known as Hal Taliaferio) and young Buzz Barton are visibly hesitant before the microphone while heroine Virginia Browne Faire is nearly incomprehensible. Despite these caveats, Breed of the West is fairly entertaining and, if nothing else, remains a valuable depiction of a vanished small-town California.
