The Oscar-winning title song was as popular as this 1960s family classic that was also one of the first salvos of the animal rights movement. The sentimental story is about a British game warden in Kenya (Bill Travers) and his wife (Virginia McKenna) who raise a lion cub named Elsa with the goal of returning her to the wild. Based on the popular true-life story by Joy Adamson, Born Free has the sure-fire winning combination of a cuddly wild creature and gorgeous natural settings. It inspired a less successful sequel, Living Free, a television series, and documentaries.
