A couple of future "auteurs" experimented with some interesting camera angles and bits of hard-boiled dialogue in this otherwise so-so detective yarn directed by Richard Fleisher and co-scripted by a very young Robert Altman. RKO, meanwhile, cast a couple of tough guy actors who knew how to handle a punch to the nose and basically let it go at that. You wouldn't necessarily guess that the future directors of The Boston Strangler, Soylent Green, Nashville and Short Cuts cut their teeth on this kind of material but it is very Altman-esque indeed to name an optometrist "Dr. Briller," which, for the initiated, is Danish for eye glasses.
