Bob Hampton of Placer was adapted from the popular novel of the same name by Randall Parrish. The eponymous Hampton, played by James Kirkwood, is a military officer who is erroniously accused of murder. Released from prison, the embittered Hampton creates a whole new life for himself as a much-feared gunslinger and reckless gambler. While journeying westward on a wagon train, he is introduced to young Marjorie Daw-who turns out to be the daughter he never knew he had. As the plot complications begin piling up, Hampton has a lot of heavy-duty redemption in store for him, culminating in his demise at the Little Big Horn! Director Marshall Neilan manages to make the storyline's incredible coincidences and contrivances seem completely credible.
