synopsis
This Serbo-Croatian film from Academy Award nominee Emir Kusturica premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Black Cat, White Cat is a fast paced slapstick farce about Gypsy life on the Danube. Grga and Zarije are rivals; one runs the garbage dump, the other a cement factory. When Zarije's son pulls a train heist that goes awry, his partner Dadan demands he pay back the debt by marrying off Grga's son Zare to Dadan's headstrong sister Afrodita. Hijinx ensue, with parties, chases, pratfalls, fake deaths, double-crosses, bed-hopping, mistaken identities and other comic mishaps all here for good measure. The film builds to the arranged marriage between Zare and Afrodita, where all Gypsy hell breaks loose.
