Beyond Victory (1931)
by Hans J. Wollstein review

Rather than a heartfelt statement on the futility of war, Beyond Victory is simply a dull melodrama peopled with rather unsympathetic characters. William Boyd and Lissi Arna play their roles as if in a trance -- a change of directors and Arna's obvious problems with English probably the main reasons -- and only James Gleason has something interesting to do or say. Which is not all that surprising since the veteran character actor is also credited with the screenplay. According to some reports, Helen Twelvetrees and June Collyer were cut from the final film, a rather startling development considering RKO's high hopes for both.
