Synopsis by Mark Deming

The Simpson family visits a traveling carnival that has come to Springfield, and Bart (voice of Nancy Cartwright) allows his mischievous side get the better of him when he gets behind the wheel of Adolf Hitler's car, which is on display. Bart accidentally starts the vintage auto and wrecks it, and he and his father, Homer (voice of Dan Castellaneta), become part of the carnival's crew to work off the damages. Homer and Bart strike up a friendship with veteran carny Cooder (voice of Jim Varney) and his son, Spud (voice of Tress MacNeille), but Cooder makes the mistake of trusting Homer with running the ring-toss game for the evening, which leads to the carnival being shut down by the police. Feeling guilty, Homer offers to let Cooder and Spud stay at the Simpson's home, which doesn't go over well with Marge (voice of Julie Kavner) or Lisa (voice of Yeardley Smith). But things take a real turn for the worse when Cooder expresses his gratitude by giving the Simpsons tickets for a trip on a glass-bottom boat; when they return home, the family discovers that the carny and his son have taken over the house. "Bart Carny" was first aired on January 11, 1998.
