An East Berlin doctor is banished to a remote hospital in the country after applying for an exit visa from the GDR, and begins to suspect that her kindly new boss is spying on her for the secret police in this drama set at the dawn of the 1980s. At odds with bucolic new surroundings, frustrated doctor Barbara (Nina Hoss) finds comfort only in her secret rendezvous' with her West German paramour Jörg (Mark Waschke). Jörg is currently in the midst of formulating an escape plan for Barbara, and in the meantime the exiled doctor must be careful to maintain a safe distance from chief physician Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld). Despite Andre's outward kindness to her, Barbara still suspects that he is acting as the eyes and ears of imposing local Stasi officer Schütz (Rainer Bock). When a pregnant patient named Stella (Jasna Fritzi Bauer) arrives in the hospital infected with meningitis, however, Barbara and Andre begin working closely together to save the life of the young woman and her unborn child. Over, time, Barbara falls in love with Andre. Yet through hit all she remains suspicious of his true intentions, and when Jörg returns later to help Barbara flee across the border, she finds herself reluctant to join him despite the obvious dangers of remaining behind.
