Synopsis by Sean Hurley

This video documents a performance of Bach's famous baroque interpretation of the Nativity story in six parts. First heard in its entirety at Leipzig's St. Thomas Church at Christmastime 1734, Bach's Christmas Oratorio tells the Nativity story according to the texts of the apostles St. Matthew and St. Luke. Bach's logical order in interpreting these chosen texts results in a musical piece that is dramatically compelling while conceptually unified. Featured performers include Katharina Beidler, Heidi Riess, Arnim Ude, and the Dresden Philharmonic.
