Set in the Middle Ages in Azerbaijan, this routine historical drama focuses on the exploits of a national hero, Babek (Rasim Belaev). Babek led the Azerbaijanis in their fight against foreign aggressors and the many battle scenes in the film reflect the difficulties they encountered in defending their homeland. Costumes, props, horses, and scenery all help to re-create the period, though the drama itself is somewhat formulaic. The Azerbaijani studios tend to focus on national heroes as a motif in their films.
