synopsis
Based on a novel by Werner Helwig, this routine, slow-paced melodrama about a Greek fisherman and the antagonisms of two coastal villages is directed by Horst Haechler. Without the novel's symbolism, the story is taken at face value as the two communities devastate each other in their small, restricted war. The young hero (Cliff Robertson) and his intended bride (Maria Schell) idealistically plan for a new beginning together somewhere else just as he becomes more and more embroiled in trying to settle the perennial disputes. He eventually kills the villainous overlord of one of the villages (Cameron Mitchell), an act that does not seem to bode well for his own future.
