synopsis
Vacillating to the point of bringing on nausea, this is the story of a priest (Humphrey Bogart) who renounces his vows in order to fight with the Falangist rebels in the Spanish Civil War and begins traveling with a patriotic prostitute (Ava Gardner). When they are both captured by the Loyalists and confined, the ex-priest has a crisis of convictions. There is, however, a lack of clarity regarding religious convictions and political position in this movie that makes the entire premise somewhat murky.
