When the Spaniards invaded South America in 1539, they were amazed by the cities of gold they found there. In Cuzco, Peru, the Incan "navel of the universe", Pizzaro and his followers saw an entire city square filled with life sized human and animal figures, corn fields, and butterflies made of solid gold. The conquistadores melted it all down and sent the gold back to Spain, along with stories of a fabulous lost city of gold they called El Dorado. This legend fired the imagination and lust for gold of adventurers for centuries to come, from Sir Walter Raleigh to Leonard P. Clark. This documentary explores the truth behind the legends, recreates ancient temple rituals, and visits spectacular religious sites in the mountains, in a quest for the answer to the location of the mythical kingdom of gold.
