This film was based on Captain Dieppe, which was a novel and a play, both written by Anthony Hope. Hope is more well known as the author of The Prisoner of Zenda, which fared better in its several cinematic incarnations than this particular story. But like Zenda, it's an action story that takes place in a tiny European principality. In a nutshell, an American, Captain Dieppe (Robert Warwick) has just finished up a covert operation for a foreign government, and in order to escape harassment by the secret service, he holes up at the castle of Count Fieramondi (Juan de la Cruz). His wife, the Countess (Winifred Greenwood), has run up a large gambling debt, and to escape blackmailers, she has a pretty girl take her place while she heads for Rome to raise some money. After a lot of action-packed situations, Dieppe gets the girl.
