A Boy and His Dog (1975)
by Michael Costello review

Although volatile science fiction writer Harlan Ellison is famed for savaging screen adaptations of his work, he was quite fond of this film version of his book, which also served as a source material for Mad Max (1979). A Western fixture, actor L.Q. Jones wrote and directed the post-apocalyptic satire, which stars Don Johnson as Vic, a horny, scavenging cutthroat, wandering a nuked-out wasteland with a witty and scornful talking dog as a sidekick. Although most of the attempted satire of the film is lame and familiar, the banter between Johnson and the dog, who treats his buddy with utter disdain, is surprisingly funny. After the susceptible hero is lured underground by the delectable Quilla June (Suzanne Benton) for some experimentation, the film unfortunately becomes grindingly predictable. Best for fans of Johnson or low-budget cult films.
