Set during the first century C.E, Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara) travels from the small and traditional fishing village where she grew up in the Holy Land to join a groundbreaking social movement led by the intoxicating Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). As her interest in the movement and Jesus himself develops, Mary discovers Jesus’ fate is already decided leading her to commit herself further to this new religious movement.
